Great picture. Very dramatic.

Were the purples what you actually saw, or were they developed post-production?   Go to comment »
I recently added a Nikon D300 to my equipment collection in preparation for an upcoming event, and this shot is among the first shots I've experienced with this new and pretty amazing digital SLR body.

I'm somewhat fascinated by several aspects of this picture. First, the colors of the sky - I can't imagine having landed a better day to find detail in the sky! The blue of the sky reflected off a bluish window further accented all the drama of a sky ready to storm.

Second, this idea of capturing an endless, textured sky in a box holds a lot of meaning to me as a photographer and an admirer of beauty in nature and in general. I find this picture representative of my effort to capture moments of beauty; analogous to the Gibbs phenomena, I can only attempt to capture continuous functions of beauty with my finite medium.

If I could change one thing about this picture, I'd spend a little more time figuring out how to get the right perspective. This glass is fairly high above my head, so I was pointed up (hence the perspective-slanted vertical lines) while shooting, but I wasn't centered to the window, so the perspective isn't equal from side to side. At some point, I think I may also go back and bring out some of the detail in the brick wall.
